How to Make a Waffle

Waffles are one of the most-loved recipes around the world. Perfect waffles must be crispy on the outside but soft within. They are mostly made of batter baked between two plates. The basic ingredients in making a waffle are flour, baking powder, sugar, milk, butter, salt and eggs.

You can also choose from a wide variety of toppings according to your choice. Some examples of toppings include fruit, whipped cream and syrup.

With the advent of waffle makers on the market, making a waffle is just a simple task. Normally, all you take is 15 minutes when preparing the batter and another 5 minutes when baking waffles per piece.

However, cooking time can be lessened depending on the type of waffle maker you use.

The first part in making a waffle is the preparation of the batter and the waffle maker equipment. The steps in the preparation stage are the following:

  • Combine all dry ingredients, like the flour, sugar, baking powder and salt. To create soft waffles, sift the dry ingredients first before combining them.
  • Partition the yolks from the whites and put them in different containers by using an egg separating tool. Make sure that no yolk remains on the whites, or else the whites won’t foam correctly.
  • Beat the egg whites with a whisk until they foam properly.
  • Mix the wet ingredients, like the butter and yolks in a separate container. Combine the milk and vanilla with the mixture until they are thoroughly mixed.
  • Mix both dry and wet ingredients by creating a hollow in the dry ingredients first. Pour in the wet mixture into the hollow. Mix them altogether until all is moist. Never over-mix them or else they will result in hard waffles. It is quite okay to leave some lumps in it.
  • Fold in the egg whites with the mixed batter by stirring the mixture from top to bottom.
  • Preheat the waffle maker by plugging it in and turning it to a specific temperature. The waffle maker is ready to cook if a small drop of water sizzles when you drop it.

The second part in making a waffle is the cooking stage. The steps of this part are the following:

  • Brush the top and bottom grid plates with oil by using a pastry brush. If you suffer from sticking waffles all the time, this step is required each time you make a waffle to prevent it from sticking to the plates.
  • Pour the batter evenly to the waffle plates. The amount of batter depends on the size of your waffle iron. For certainty, use a small amount because the batter expands as it cooks.
  • Close the lid of the waffle maker and wait for it to cook. Some waffle makers already have their automatic shutoffs that indicate the end of the cooking process. If you lack that feature, allow around 2 minutes of cooking time for each waffle. If you prefer to make brown waffles, cook them for longer. Sometimes, cooking is done when there is no longer steam produced.
  • Use a spatula when removing the waffle from the iron.

The third part in making a waffle is the placement of toppings when serving it. You can top the cooked waffles with syrup and butter. You can also use powdered sugar and fresh fruits in topping cooked waffles. The best fruits available for toppings include bananas, strawberries and blueberries.

Fresh fruits can also be made into a fruit syrup by simply combining them with sugar under medium heat. Fruits can also be included in the batter for added texture and sweetness. Moreover, you can never go wrong with chocolate syrup and whipped cream. This can easily transform your normal waffle into a pleasant dessert.
