What Are The Characteristics Of A Belgian Waffle?

The delicious and airy waffle is nearly an inch thick. It is rectangular in shape and has deep dimples. It is sold all over Belgium at restaurants and in street stands. If purchased in Belgium, it is usually dusted with powdered sugar. Other options include chocolate sauce, whipped cream, fruit, or other goodies.

What Makes Belgian Waffles So Good?

This type of waffle is based on a yeast raised batter as opposed to waffles from the United States which are based on baking powder based batter. The yeast is the secret to creating a waffle that is tender, yet crispy.

Another difference is beaten egg whites instead of a whole egg. The egg whites, along with the yeast are added to the batter and work together in perfect harmony.

How Can I Make Belgian Or Brussels Waffles At Home?

Start by gathering your ingredients. (These ingredients will make about 5 waffles.)

  • 2 cups of flour
  • 3/4 cup of sugar
  • 3 and a half tsps of baking powder
  • 2 large eggs that have been separated
  • 1 and a half cups of milk
  • 1 cup of melted butter
  • 1 tsp of vanilla extract

Get the waffle iron ready and preheat it so it is ready when your batter is complete.

Combine flour, baking powder, and sugar in a large bowl. In a smaller bowl, beat your egg yolks.

With the egg yolks, add melted butter, milk, and vanilla. Add this combination to the dry mix until combined.

Form peaks by beating the 2 egg whites in a separate bowl. Once formed,  fold into batter.

Use your favorite non-stick cooking spray on preheated waffle iron.Pour mix and cook until golden brown.

Enjoy your waffles warm. You can serve them as they do in Belgium with confectioners sugar, chocolate sauce, and whipped cream.

Another option is enjoying them with fruit or syrup. The sky is the limit when choosing what to top these delicious waffles with.

Tip: Store unused batter covered in the refrigerator for up to one week. Simply whisk before using again.
